Unless you’ve been living under a rock, by now you know that at 5pm est on January 13th, 2009, Hati experienced an Earth quake which measured a 7.0 on the Richter Scale. Homes, schools and government buildings have been damaged and this is a severe blow that the third world nation was not prepared to experience. It is times like these where its is important that the global community come together to help our fellow world citizens. Below you can find the multiple ways you can help.
1. Text| Singer Wyclef is well known for his work in his homeland of Hati. Your can text “YELE” to 501501 up to six times to donate $5USD to relieve efforts in Port Au Prince. You may also text “HAITI” to 90999 for a $10 USD contribution to be made
2. Donate Through the Web| Charities such as Unicef, The American Red Cross and Food for The Poor are currently making attempts to provide relief to Hatian citizens.
3. Start a Diaster Relief Drive at School/Church| Donating supplies and food is probably the easiest thing for you to do to help others. Ask your student council, student government or principals office about starting a drive. Our Tips? Have the drive run for about a month if possible. Dedicate Two weeks primarily for Non-perishable Food products such as Tuna, Soup, Cereal, Macaroni and Cheese, Corn Beef etc, and Dedicate t,he second two weeks to supplies and gently used articles of clothing such as Towels, Toiletries, Bandages, First Aid Kits, shirts, pants, diapers etc. Get in touch with your local American Red Cross branch to see what kind of materials are best to collect as well as how to organize a pick-up.
4 Awareness| Hati is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. When all is said and done, and the earthquake news leaves the headlines, this will remain to be true. Keep these charities in mind even after the initial relief efforts have occurred. Things don’t change in one day.
