BLACK EYED PEAS’ “I GOT A FEELING” GOES 6X PLATINUM

As a music industry student, I’ve heard more than a few disparaging words about the Black Eyed Peas’ music. The comments range from “THEY SUCK”, which comes mostly from the serious rocker types who think their music is going to change the world *insert side eye here*, and believe that their lyrics have more depth than the simple lyrical phrases like “DRINK!, Mozoltov” to “THEY’RE JUST A GIMMICK” from fellow wannabe pop-stars. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and by no means do I deny them the right to express theirs, but as Jay-Z once famously said, “men lie, woman lie, numbers don’t.” And in the case of the Black Eyed Peas, the numbers are staggering. This week, as the Peas’ worldwide 7.33 million-selling #1 album The E.N.D. moves into its 59th week on the Billboard 200 albums chart (still bulleted inside the Top 20 after more than 13 months out), its landmark single “I Gotta Feeling” (released June 2009) becomes the first digital download ever to pass the 6 million threshold. The single spent a record 14 weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts.
The Black Eyed Peas have been able to tap into the ears of many and have created an undeniably catchy sounds that blends hip-hop, pop and electronica in a seamless manner.
How can long can we go on writing off sales of this magnitude and chalking it up to clever marketing, all while blatantly criticizing the taste of the average American consumer by insinuating that they are buying garbage and that they
don’t know good music?” In a society like ours, where money is tight for most and music can be easily accessed for free, consumers know exactly what they want to spend their money on, so it says a lot when 6 million people spent their hard earned $1.29 on this single. And why shouldn’t they? “I Gotta Feeling” is one of the catchiest pop radio friendly singles that we’ve had in a long time. It’s one of those songs whose content can be accepted by all age groups and that is certainly a large part of the appeal of the song. The Black Eyed Peas have been able to tap into the ears of many and have created an undeniably catchy sounds that blends hip-hop, pop and electronica in a seamless manner. Sorry haters, but you’ll be hearing this song an for a long time and I’d bet money that 20 years from now you’ll be dancing to it and you’re kids wedding. The Black Eyed Peas are here to stay and this feat should command the group a bit more respect amongst their critics and dissenters.
