The death of Michael Jackson in June 2009 was mind blowing. We lost an icon that seemed almost possessed with superhuman talents, but Michael Jackson’s absence also brought to light another completely shocking revelation: The music industry doesn’t have any interesting Male Pop/R&B singers currently doing anything of interest. The Male Pop/R&B singer was one of the most viable products in the industry. Said singer would be able to have his songs played on multiple stations and have the ability to chart not only on the Billboard Hip-Hop/R&B Singles chart, but cross over to the Billboard Hot 100 as well.
Their videos would be highly anticipated, unique and filled with animated choreography.Think about the way fans are overcome with excitement when Beyonce, Rihanna or Lady GaGa releases a new video and the media frenzy that ensues afterwards. Now think, when’s the last time a male artist caused such hysteria or hype with his work? All of Michael’s apparent heirs seem to be slipping or taking a break. Justin Timberlake has been M.I.A since the success of FutureSex/LoveSounds, Usher has yet to deliver an album or single that could compare to the genius that was created with the Confessions album, and Chris Brown’s domestic abuse issues over shadow the bulk his work. Paltry attempts by artists like Omarion go unnoticed. Even the artists that are doing well and having success such as Maxwell and Trey Songz, are straight up R&B singers. They do what they do best, but we don’t look to them for stage presence or a hot video filled with choreography. Are the females going to be dominating the Kingdom of Pop from now on?
