Mariah Carey was the quintessential 90’s artist and the crown jewel of The 90’s diva Trinity (Mariah Carey, Madonna and Janet Jackson), so much so that shes the only artist to have a single chart at number one every year from 1990-2000. Then she had her well-publicized breakdown that saw the media make the woman who was formerly America’s songbird sweetheart into a manic, depressive and slightly psycho case. Despite it all, Carey bounced back from all the hoopla to produce this decade’s best selling single and show the world why she’s one of the world’s best selling artists. Lets see how she fared this decade.
Album of the Decade| The Emancipation of Mimi
Without a doubt Mariah’s 2005 effort, The Emancipation of Mimi, is her most cohesive and career defining set of this decade. After the Glitter debacle ( which personally speaking, I’ve seen worst movies so I didn’t quite understand the hoopla), Mariah didn’t quite find her footing until she released TEOM. The first single “It’s like That” with its minimalist production and light vocals only wet our appetite for what was to come and the marketing plan was brilliant. “The Return of The Voice”? Come on! !Who was going to argue with that! Relying on old soul samples and hearkening back to the older, simpler times and themes of R&B, Carey found the songs that complemented and showed off her 5 octave vocal range and found the perfect balance of Pop,R&B and Hip-hop, a fusion she was tinkling with since 1994’s “Fantasy.”
Standout Tracks|” We Belong Together”, “Mine Again”, “Fly Like a Bird”
