• On September 13th, 1997, Mariah Carey started a three week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Honey’, her 12th US No.1 and third single to debut at No.1. It was a No.3 hit in the UK. Carey has notched an additional 6 #1 hit singles since then, with a whopping 18 #1′s to her name.
• On September 13th, 1998, Lauryn Hill started a five week run at No.1 on the US album chart with The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.‘ A certified R&B classic, Hill went on to win 5 Grammys for the album!

Listen as Carey sings with a tone almost unrecognizable to the voice that graced 18 #1 hit records. Ever since the Merry Christmas II You album, I’ve been craving an album from Carey hat uses more live and jazz inspired instrumentation. Unlike other aging pop stars, Mariah has a voice to fall back on and one that is capable of doing multiple genres of music. It’ll be quite interesting to hear the sonic direction of her next record! Duets II hits stores September 20th.

In “ch…” news of the day, Aaron Carter has stated that Michael Jackson offered him cocaine and wine when he was 15 years old. Peep the quote from Aaron below

I never talked about it. This is the first time. I do…I miss Michael. I have spent such incredible times with him. I did things with him that nobody else did. But I was also troubled about what he did to me. Yes, he gave me wine. I mean, I could have refused, but I was 15. He gave me cocaine. I felt weird about that and other stuff. We spoke afterwards, hours and hours, on the phone. I admired Michael, but his behavior bothered me a lot. Then my mother called the police.

I’ll be the first to admit that my bias as a full fledged stan of all things Jackson, but this is ridiculous. A. I recall  back in 2004, Cater defended the King of Pop saying that this never happened. B. What do you gain from telling this story now?  The road back from irrelevancy is cold and dark one… and the devil is a liar. Can’t we just let Michael rest in peace?

Some of you may be too young to remember, but Mariah Carey and New York Yankees Star Derek Jeter dated for a while back in the late 90′s. Apparently the two still had a great relationship as Mariah calls him on his birthday to wish and sing him Happy Birthday. Too bad Derek doesn’t appreciate it! It’s my birthday. 37. I don’t care. Every year, Mariah sings an amazing “Happy Birthday” to my voicemail. (I have great relationships with all my exes, “Page Six” can’t touch me. Hi, “Page Six!”) I  delete it without listening.

Rihanna’s “S&M” rises 2-1 on the Billboard Hot 100, giving Ms. Fenty her 10th number one single! Having first reigned atop the Hot 100 the week of May 13, 2006, with “SOS,” Rihanna logs the shortest span between a solo artist’s first and 10th No. 1s in the chart’s 52-year history, a stretch of four years, 11 months and two weeks, beating fellow chat legend Mariah Carey’s five-year, four-month span.

Among all acts, Rihanna trails only the Beatles (one year, eight months and one week) and the Supremes (two years, eight months and three weeks) for the fastest accumulation of 10 Hot 100 No. 1s. Rihanna is additionally the youngest artist to notch 10 No. 1s in the Hot 100′s archives. At 23 years, two months and one week, Rihanna (born Feb. 20, 1988) eclipses the mark established by Carey, who was 25 years, eight months and one week old when she tallied her 10th Hot 100 leader.

With this latest #1, Rihanna becomes the ninth artist to total at least 10 Hot 100 No. 1s and ties with Pop music Icon Janet Jackson, who also has 10 number ones. The female number one club features has Carey in the lead with an historic 18 number ones, Madonna with 12, Whitney Houston with 11 and RIhanna and Ms. Jackson at 10.

A few months ago, I made the comment that Rihanna is probably the only artist at the moment who has a chance at beating Mariah Carey’s historic 18 #1s. Many Mariah Carey fans weren’t pleased with those comments, but it remains to be true. On another note, this makes me eager to see whether Mariah & Janet will be able to push the boundaries and add more #1 singles to their tallies despite the current state of their respective illustrious careers. Can Mariah hit 19? Will Janet ever get her 11th number one? If Cher could top the charts at age 50 with “Believe”, there may be hope yet for these two in this ageist industry.

Congratulations to Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon; the two have announced that they are expecting twins. Cannon spilled the tea (without Mimi’s permission) on his radio show 92.3 Rollin’ With Nick Cannon this morning, saying that Mariah was the first one to give the announcement. At her performance on TNT’s Christmas In Washington 2010, Mariah was questioned by President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama on if she was having twins and due to her excitement, she shared the news. We, here at Base, would like to wish Mimi a happy and healthy term and congrats once again!!!

Mariah Carey released the video for her dance remix of ‘Auld Lang Syne’ has been released and it’s hilarity in motion! The diva does little more than move her shoulders in front a green screen filled with cheap images of fireworks. I don’t know whose idea this was, but a better video could’ve been filmed in Mariah’s NYC apartment, mocking a festive roof top party scene and that wouldn’t have been that much more expensive that whatever this is.
